Day 109: Spinnin' my wheels

First thing this morning, I shoveled the sidewalk, dug out the car and headed across town to pick up Dan.  We went to Topeka and had breakfast with Rojo.  It was nice.  We picked up the kids, fed them tacos and Dan was back to work by one.  I took the kids home and called the manager about the rental application I needed to turn in.  He told me where to take it and I headed across town.

As it turns out, the drop box for the application was in a residential area, which in Lawrence means that the streets were not plowed yet.  I tried to get onto that dumb street from three different directions.  I got stuck twice.  Luckily, a couple of nice guys pushed me the first time and another nice guy in a different spot pushed me out the second time.  After an hour, I still had the dumb application.  I called Dave, the manager guy, and he said he would meet me at the apartment complex at six.  I headed for the grocery store.

As I pulled into the parking lot at HyVee, I realized that I didn't need anything at the store.  *sigh*  I drove back across town again and got a couple of file boxes at Office Depot.  I got modeling clay for Payton's school project at Michael's and I was finally beginning to feel like I was accomplishing something by the time I got to Little Ceasar's for pizza and wings.  I was there at 20 'til six.  My Hot 'n Ready pizza was ready at six.  I headed towards what will hopefully soon be our new apartment.  I was frustrated that I was running late, so when I turned onto Wisconsin St, I gave the car a little too much gas like a dummy and ended up in a ditch full of snow.

I walked the two blocks down the unplowed road, trying to walking in the ruts so I wouldn't get too much snow in my shoes.  There are two apartment complexes across the street from each other, so of course, I went to the wrong one first.  I finally met Dave, viewed the apartment, with the other lady he was showing it to, and turned in my application.  Then he asked about the application fee.  I told him I have my debit card and he said they don't take cards, only cash or money orders.  REALLY?  Can anything else go completely wrong today?

I got back to the car, called the insurance company, who called a tow truck.  It was only 12 degrees out but I was almost out of gas so I alternated between warming up and saving gas.  After 45 minutes, Rojo was in town to see Dan and he stopped by with coffee and trail mix.  He doesn't have a tow rope because someone borrowed it and broke it, but it was nice that he stopped by.  Finally, the tow guy showed up and drug me out of my ditch.  I stopped at QT for gas and got donuts for the kids to make up for the fact that supper didn't happen until 8:30.

And at ten thirty, I get to head back out again.  I don't know how we are ever going to get packed at this rate.  I can't believe how much time I have spent in the cold and the snow today.  At least Dan will be home tonight and we'll pray for a better day tomorrow.  So frustrating.
